Medical Waste: What Patients Should Do

Where your treatment generates waste, this needs to be disposed of carefully to protect the environment and other people.

Proper disposal is important for safety and compliance. Here’s what you should do:

Needles and Sharps

If your medicine is an injectable product, you will be given a sharps bin for waste.

  • Use the sharps bin for needles, injection devices, and other equipment such as empty ampoules and syringes.

  • Never throw needles in household waste or recycling.

  • When your sharps bin is full, make sure it is securely closed and sealed ready for collection. Your HealthNet delivery driver will typically collect it during a scheduled delivery.

If the driver is unable to collect your sharps bin, you can take it to your local pharmacy for safe disposal.

Leftover or Unused Medicines

  • Medicine should never be disposed of in ordinary household waste or down the sink.

  • Unused oral medicines can be handed back to your HealthNet delivery driver or returned to most local community pharmacies for safe disposal.

  • If you have any questions about how to dispose of medicines correctly, speak to your local pharmacist or contact us directly.

Faulty Devices or Damaged Medicines

Why This Matters

Safe disposal prevents harm to others, protects the environment, and ensures compliance with healthcare regulations.
