Make Kindness The Norm

Make kindness the norm.

World Kindness Day promotes the importance of being kind to each other, to yourself, and to the world.

We’ve interviewed Jess Bell, one of our HealthNet Mental Health First Aiders, to discuss the importance of being kind and gather some inspirational messages to help brighten our day.

Be kind to yourself and others not just today, but every day.

What Does Kindness Mean To You?

It might seem like a cliché but for me, kindness can change someone’s day.

It costs nothing to be kind and we must remember that we have no idea what someone is going through.

Why is Being Kind So Important?

We all exist in our own worlds and although we acknowledge that everyone has struggles, we don’t truly know what another person is going through, ever.

I watched a film in my early teens called “Pay it Forward” that I would definitely recommend.

Being kind not only benefits the recipient but will always bring you some joy too. It costs nothing and can really change someone else’s outlook – who wouldn’t want to do that?

What is a Mental Health First Aider?

I think being a Mental Health First Aider can mean different things to different people.

For me, it’s first and foremost about helping others in times of need, in whatever way that looks for them.

It is about being equipped and educated to keep someone safe and signposting them appropriately for further appropriate support.

What Inspired You Into This Role?

In the past, I had taken on roles such as the well-being lead, so bringing my Mental Health First Aider experience to HealthNet seemed like a logical thing to do.

This role has taught me so much and I would say that I use the skills I’ve learned daily, all in different ways.

How Does HealthNet Promote Mental Well-being for its Colleagues?

For me, the little things HealthNet does such as pizza days and an ice-cream van visit are positive and encouraging for the staff.

The marking of awareness days with hints and tips around mental health is also great, alongside the support of the Help@Hand service that is available.

Why Do You Enjoy Working at HealthNet?

I genuinely look forward to coming into the office and seeing my colleagues!

We work hard but we also laugh a lot too. We all get along and have each other’s back, and being in that environment is a pleasure.

We care about each other and that is priceless.
